Genius Underfoot

Flor LogoA Genius product approaches a problem–often, an old problem–in a new way. Flor is a great example: they revisited the rug.

Rugs are big, expensive investments. Buy one, especially a large one, and you live in fear of spills, dirt, play-doh: basically, the stuff of life. You can clean your rug with a big machine, but that’s a pain and, realistically, you won’t do it very often.

Instead of a big roll of carpet, Flor products are all sold as modular pieces: 2′x2′ squares, held together with simple, reusable adhesive discs. Once installed (you easily do it yourself, even for a wall-to-wall-sized carpet), the product looks pretty much like any other carpet. But if the stuff of life shows up on the floor, you pick up the square that got dirty, and wash it. In the sink. Then you put it back. And if it’s permanently stained (Junior found the sharpies!), just buy another square of rug to replace it.

Since the rug system is modular, the product provides amazing capabilities to the consumer. Mix and match colors within a rug style. Mix and match styles within a single rug. Put rugs in places where you formerly didn’t: in the garage, or on the porch. And the company’s “have fun” attitude supports the approach beautifully, giving consumers license to experiment.

Flor may not be for everyone, but the product’s unique approach is Genius.
