Here are a few articles I’ve published over the past few years in various journals and magazines…
- Easy to Use: Unravelling Everyone’s Favorite Blanket Statement [pdf] - From Product Development Best Practice Report, 2003. A look at what “easy to use” means, and how to sharpen the thinking around it.
- New Considerations for Medical Appliance Designers [pdf] - From Appliance Magazine, 2004. A discussion of the changing landscape in the design of medical products.
- Products Talking to People [pdf] - This is an article I published in 2005, in the Journal of Product Innovation Management. The central thrust is that the interaction between consumer and product can be seen as a conversation, and that the usual rules of conversation apply.
Here are a few books that shaped the way I think about products and marketing (even the ones about other things)…
- The Media Equation by Byron Reeves and Cliff Nass
- The Timeless Way of Building by Christopher Alexander
- The Death and Life of Great American Cities by Jane Jacobs
- Ogilvy on Advertising by David Ogilvy
- The Product Manager’s Handbook by Linda Gorchels
